Apple released its first foldable smartphone to the public on October 23, but a wave of hardware complaints has emerged within days of the launch. The iPhone Duo, which carries a starting price of $1,999, is facing reports of inner display failures that have prompted the company to intervene with a formal support response.

Key Point 1: Apple confirmed the existence of a specific defect in the inner display on a limited number of units. In a statement provided to news outlets on October 26, the company stated, "We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units." Apple has directed affected customers to contact AppleCare to arrange for a replacement device. This offer applies to the acknowledged defect regardless of whether the customer has an AppleCare+ subscription.

Key Point 2: Early user reports describe consistent damage patterns occurring near the hinge. Multiple owners on Reddit documented cracks and bright white lines spreading from the fold toward the right side of the screen. One user, u/leftyhyzer16, reported the screen cracking before the initial setup was complete. Another user, u/Midnight_Slump, experienced a failure within six hours and received a verified replacement. A third owner, u/chimchambam, cited a display failure after three hours of use. These accounts suggest the issue appears after minimal usage of the folding mechanism.

Key Point 3: Repair experts have identified a potential mechanical cause for the screen pressure. The group iFixit disassembled the iPhone Duo and used CT scans to examine the hinge assembly. They observed a small support bar that may not move sufficiently out of the display's path when the phone folds. If the screen presses against this bar, the resulting pressure could cause the observed cracks. While this remains a theory, it aligns with the location of the damage reported by users.

The iPhone Duo features a 7.6-inch inner display that expands when opened and a 5.4-inch outer display when closed. The device was introduced in September to offer a larger screen without the bulk of a tablet. Apple has not disclosed the total number of affected units or the specific root cause of the failures. The company did not respond to further requests for comment before the publication of this report. Owners are advised to document any damage and contact Apple Support directly, even if the device was purchased through a wireless carrier.
