Arlington ISD is confronting a structural shift in its school system as student numbers fall and costs rise. The district’s Long-Range Facility Planning Committee met on October 29 to review data on future facility usage. This group, which includes parents, employees, and community members, is tasked with creating a plan to optimize resources for the district.

Committee member Adam Baker stated that the group is focusing on three main areas: student opportunities, facility utilization, and enrollment trends. Baker noted that the committee is also examining student safety, access to programs, and how enrollment is balanced across junior high schools. The committee was established to help the district address common challenges seen across Texas, such as declining attendance and budget pressures.

The financial impact of these trends is direct. Public school funding is tied to student attendance, so fewer students result in less revenue. Meanwhile, operating expenses and inflation continue to increase. In Arlington ISD specifically, enrollment has dropped by nearly 15,000 students over the last ten years. Projections for 2030 show the district will have 13,633 open seats, which represents 37.7% of its total capacity.

Baker explained that the committee is currently reviewing data and identifying possible options. He said the group is weighing different scenarios to determine the best path forward. The committee will continue this work in upcoming meetings to shape its final recommendations.

The committee is scheduled to present its findings to the Arlington ISD Board of Trustees in January 2027. The board will then decide on the next steps for the district’s facility planning.
