Maritime security firm Ambrey and the International Maritime Organisation report that the Black Sea has become the deadliest waterway for seafarers in 2026. The region has recorded at least 40 deaths, surpassing the 24 confirmed fatalities in the Strait of Hormuz. This shift places the Black Sea above the Gulf, which has historically received more global attention for maritime hazards.

Crews on oil tankers, cargo ships, and grain carriers face drone attacks while operating near EU and NATO territory. Some estimates indicate that attack frequency in the Black Sea is more than six times higher than in the Gulf. Ambrey data shows that over 570 ships were targeted in the region during the current year. The third quarter saw an average of more than four attacks per day.

Vessels have suffered damage from both deliberate targeting and crossfire during port bombardments. Oleh Hryhoriuk, chair of the Marine Transport Workers' Trade Union of Ukraine, described the risk of calling at Ukrainian ports as near suicidal. His comments reflect the growing concern among industry workers regarding the safety of routes in the region.

Shipping companies are reacting to the elevated danger based on economic factors. Record-high freight rates have led some firms to accept the risks of transporting oil from the Middle East. In contrast, most operators are reluctant to send fleets into the Black Sea because profit margins are lower and the dangers are considerably higher.

Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Țoiu stated that Russia is turning the Black Sea into a danger zone for civilian vessels. Her assessment aligns with the data showing a sharp increase in attacks on commercial traffic in the area.
