Ontario has suspended funding for unemployed workers seeking skills training through the Better Jobs Ontario program. This pause coincides with a separate freeze on Ontario Student Assistance Program payments to private colleges. The government has not issued a public announcement regarding the training fund status.

The delay affects individuals relying on provincial support to enter the workforce. Schools and employment agencies report that applications are currently under review. No formal communication has been sent to students or institutions about the specific timing of the pause.

The funding pause follows earlier actions by the provincial government. In October, Colleges and Universities Minister Nolan Quinn announced a freeze on OSAP payments. This decision came after preliminary audit findings raised concerns about financial aid usage at private career colleges.

Trillium College suspended classes following the OSAP freeze. A letter to students noted that the pause was temporary. The letter also referenced a separate funding interruption affecting students funded by Better Jobs Ontario.

Reece Daniel was scheduled to start an HVAC program in London, Ontario, on October 19. The government initially planned a meeting on October 13 to provide funding details. Officials cancelled that meeting and stated that applications were under review.

Daniel is now waiting for the next program intake in May 2027. He described the delay as frustrating because it extends the time before he can return to work. Daniel had hoped the course would help him get back on his feet quickly.

Ben Cecil, CEO of Pathways Employment Help Centre, said his agency has seen similar delays among other clients. Cecil noted that the lack of a definitive decision prevented clients from proceeding with planned training. His agency made repeated efforts to obtain clarification from the government.

Career Colleges Ontario stated that member schools have reported the funding pause. The association has not received formal communication from the province. The group wrote that it is concerned about disruptions at compliant institutions.

The association urged the government to restore funding access for students at schools without compliance issues. It advocated for a targeted approach that balances student support with sector accountability. The group emphasized the need for strong oversight across the sector.

Bianca Giacoboni, spokesperson for Minister Quinn, addressed the funding status in a recent response. She confirmed that OSAP payments are paused and that other provincial funding streams are under review. She declined to list the specific funding streams included in that review.

John Fraser, the interim Liberal leader, criticized the government for not being explicit. Fraser stated that the government should announce actions against other funding sources when they occur. He suggested the government is aware of the pause but hesitant to say it publicly.
