Eighty-two years old. That is the age of Louise Lucas, a prominent Virginia Democrat who surrendered to federal authorities this week. She faces charges of racketeering and a money laundering conspiracy. The Justice Department also accused her of conspiring to distribute marijuana.

The case involves a cannabis business she co-owns. Lucas and six other people are now in custody. The group includes her relatives. This action occurred just 12 days before the midterm election. Federal agencies often avoid such moves so close to a vote. However, Lucas is not running for reelection this year. She does have ties to other Democrats on the ballot.

Lucas is a powerful figure in state government. She has served as a state senator for 34 years. She currently holds the role of Senate president pro tempore. This makes her the first woman and first African American to hold that position. She also chairs the Senate Finance and Appropriations Committee. That role gives her significant control over state spending. She is a frequent critic of President Donald Trump.

Attorney General Todd Blanche and FBI Director Kash Patel announced the charges in Norfolk. Blanche said Lucas placed her financial interests above her constituents. He stated that the department intends to prove she violated the trust of people in Portsmouth and Chesapeake. He added that the case is not a political payback. He invited the public to read the indictment to see the details.

Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger responded to the news. She said the timing undermines the Justice Department's usual policy near elections. Spanberger noted that Lucas is presumed innocent until proven guilty. She said the senator and her family deserve a chance to present their defense. Lucas released a statement saying she will not be intimidated. She described the federal action as the full weight of the government against an 82-year-old great-grandmother.

The investigation began before the current administration took office. Agents searched Lucas' office in Portsmouth in May. They also searched The Cannabis Outlet, a store on High Street that she opened in 2021. The indictment claims the group used business entities to hide proceeds from illegal marijuana distribution. It alleges Lucas used her political position to protect the business from scrutiny. On an intercepted call in February, Lucas reportedly said she was too old to not be greedy.

Lucas has been a political figure since the 1980s. She was the first Black woman elected to the Portsmouth city council. Before politics, she worked as a shipfitter at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. She is now the CEO of a business that serves intellectually disabled adults. Virginia has legalized possessing pot, but retail sales of recreational marijuana remain illegal. The store sells legal hemp and CBD products, though some local media have questioned if some items were mislabeled.
