One person died and at least eight others were injured in a shooting on Saturday night near the Magic City Classic in Birmingham, Alabama. Authorities confirmed the incident involved multiple firearms and resulted in the detention of one individual.

Birmingham Police Department officers arrived at the 400 block of Graymont Avenue at approximately 7:50 p.m. Following their arrival, police suspended all tailgating activities in the vicinity to secure the scene. Investigators recovered several guns at the location and transported one suspect to police headquarters for questioning.

The Magic City Classic is recognized as the largest historically Black college and university football game in the United States. No law enforcement officers or first responders were injured during the response to the shooting.

As of early Sunday morning, medical status reports indicated one victim remained in critical condition. The other seven injured individuals were listed as being in stable condition.

Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett characterized the event as a senseless act of violence. He acknowledged the strain such a large event places on city personnel and thanked other law enforcement leaders for their rapid deployment of support.

Pickett stated that officers demonstrated true courage by running toward the gunfire to triage victims and render aid. He expressed gratitude that all assisting officers were able to return to their families following the incident.
