The Halloween weekend brought a surge of gun violence to entertainment districts and college towns across the United States. Police in six different cities reported multiple shootings that resulted in at least six deaths and dozens of injuries.
The deadliest incident occurred in Dallas, Texas, where four people were killed and 15 others were shot in the Deep Ellum neighborhood. This area is known for its music venues, restaurants, and nightlife. Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux stated that the incidents happened over a period of about an hour and 15 minutes on Saturday night. He noted that investigators are still determining if the three separate shootings are connected. Comeaux said, "It is a very complex situation. It has spread across several areas." The department had increased police presence in the district prior to the events, and no officers were hurt.
In Birmingham, Alabama, one person died and eight were injured in a shooting outside Legion Field after the Magic City Classic football game. Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett reported that the shooting occurred near vendors on Graymont Avenue after most spectators had left the stadium. Police detained one person and seized multiple weapons. The annual game between Alabama State and Alabama A&M attracted nearly 70,000 fans, with Alabama A&M winning 31-28.
Other cities reported significant casualties on the same weekend. In Newark, Delaware, six people were shot near the University of Delaware campus on Saturday night. All were transported to hospitals, and police closed a section of the main street for several hours. In Bloomington, Illinois, a shooting early Sunday morning near Illinois Wesleyan University killed a 19-year-old woman and left another in critical condition. Six others were treated for minor injuries.
In Arkansas, two separate shootings took place. Early Sunday morning, a man was killed and several others were injured near a shopping center southwest of Little Rock. In Fayetteville, six people were hospitalized with gunshot wounds after a shooting that followed a dispute. No arrests had been made in Fayetteville as of the latest police reports.
Two additional deaths occurred on Friday at Spirit Halloween stores in California and Michigan. In Fairfield, California, a 31-year-old pregnant woman was killed in what police described as a targeted attack at a closed shopping center. Six others were injured. In Madison Heights, Michigan, a 21-year-old man was shot and killed at a store near Detroit. Another man was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after being attacked by bystanders while police took him into custody.
