Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney criticized a pregame airplane banner in Tallahassee that urged Florida State officials to fire Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell.

The banner, which appeared above Doak Campbell Stadium before Saturday night's game, read "Fire Novell," misspelling the coach's last name by omitting the second "l" and including an "R" that does not belong in the correct spelling. Swinney described the display as embarrassing, shameful, and disrespectful during his postgame press conference. He noted that the university is home to many good people and that the action did not serve the student-athletes well.

The incident occurred as Florida State suffered a 36-24 loss to Clemson, dropping their record to 3-5 overall and 1-4 in ACC play. The Seminoles are currently tied with Georgia Tech for last place in the conference. The loss extends a difficult stretch for Norvell, who is in his seventh season with the team. Since winning the ACC title in 2023, his record stands at 10-22. Florida State had not beaten Clemson at home since 2014, entering the contest as a six-point favorite.

University president Richard McCullough had addressed fan frustration in a letter earlier in the week. He acknowledged the supporters' feelings but urged them to continue backing the student-athletes and filling the stadium. Swinney used his platform to defend Norvell, describing him as a good man, husband, and father. Swinney argued that the coaching job is difficult and that the public tendency to dismantle individuals after a loss is problematic. He expressed disappointment that the banner was flown, suggesting that such displays are not common at Clemson.

Norvell did not directly address the banner during his own postgame availability. Instead, he responded to questions about how to keep the team cohesive after fans began leaving the stadium while Florida State trailed 29-10 in the fourth quarter. The Seminoles cut the deficit to one score with five minutes remaining. Norvell stated that the team rallied and maintained belief in their ability to win. He acknowledged the high expectations surrounding the program and the intense work being poured into the group.

Norvell emphasized that the players fight for each other despite external criticism. He admitted that the team is angry and sad about the loss, just as he is, but noted that the focus must remain on improvement. He expressed confidence that the team will continue to compete for the university and that consistent effort will lead to positive results.
