Donald Glover will star in a new live-action television series based on the video game PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. The project is currently in development at Netflix, where Glover will also serve as a writer, executive producer, and director.
Glover is not working alone. His brother and frequent collaborator, Stephen Glover, will share the writing and executive producing duties. Michael Schaefer of Neon TV will executive produce alongside Fam Udeorji of Gilga. Representing the game's publisher, Krafton, Taeseok Jang and Sujin Lee from LV3H will hold the same title.
PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, often called PUBG, launched in 2017. It is a free-for-all game where large groups of players drop onto maps to fight until one person remains. The game features various weapons and vehicles but lacks a traditional narrative structure. The creative team has not yet revealed specific plot details for the upcoming show.
The title remains a commercial force more than nine years after its debut. It holds several Guinness World Records from its initial release. The game continues to attract hundreds of thousands of daily active users worldwide.
The Glover brothers have a long history of collaboration. They worked together on the FX series Atlanta, which ran for four seasons. Donald created and starred in that show, while Stephen wrote and executive produced. The duo also teamed up on the Amazon series Swarm and the film Guava Island. Stephen also wrote for Donald's Amazon series Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
Donald Glover has a wide range of credits beyond the Glover brother projects. He appeared in the films The Martian, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Solo: A Star Wars Story, and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. He also acted in the television series Community and 30 Rock. Donald is represented by The Team and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole. Stephen is represented by WME and Ginsburg Daniels Kallis.
This series joins a growing list of video game adaptations on the Netflix platform. The streamer is currently developing an Assassin's Creed TV series and a Gears of War live-action film. It is also producing animated series based on Clash of Clans and Minecraft. Netflix currently airs the game-based shows Splinter Cell: Deathwatch and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
