VIA Transit Launches New App With Free Ride Incentive
Riders who buy a pass by November 13 get a complimentary one-way ticket, marking the agency's push to replace its current mobile system.

VIA Metropolitan Transit is testing a new mobile platform against the backdrop of a changing transit landscape, betting that a free ride will convince commuters to switch. The agency introduced the GO VIA app on October 29, 2026, aiming to simplify trip planning and pass purchases. The core of the launch strategy is a two-week promotional window that ends on November 13, 2026. Riders who download the application and buy their first pass during this period qualify for a complimentary one-way, 2.5-hour pass.
The promotion requires users to complete specific steps to unlock the benefit. First, individuals must install the app from the Apple Store or Google Play. Second, they must purchase an eligible pass between October 29 and November 13. Once these conditions are met, VIA will email a unique promotional code to the address linked to the user's account. The agency promises to send these codes no later than November 24, 2026. Each account receives only one free pass, which is nontransferable and holds no cash value.
Terms of the offer restrict how riders can use the complimentary ticket. The free pass cannot be combined with other promotional deals, and no additional purchase is needed to redeem it once the code is received. VIA advises users to add the domain @publicinput.com to their trusted senders list to ensure the email arrives. Those who miss the message should check spam folders or call 210-362-2020 for assistance. The agency positions the new app as a more convenient tool for managing regional services.
This launch represents a shift in how VIA Metropolitan Transit handles digital transactions for its customers. The new interface is designed to consolidate trip planning and payment into a single mobile experience. By limiting the free ride offer to a strict two-week window, the agency seeks to drive immediate adoption. The deadline for qualifying purchases is November 13, 2026. After that date, the special promotion ends, and standard pricing applies to new app users. The agency has not announced when the legacy system will be retired, but the new platform is now available for public use.
